When I was five, once everyone at home had left—for work, for school, and my grandfather for the neighborhood coffeehouse—it was just my grandmother and me. While she sewed, I loved rummaging through her sewing box. It felt like a tiny world where I discovered something different every single time.

Then I would ask her to take out my grandfather's typewriter for me. She would secretly bring it out, making sure to put it away before he came home. I would spend hours typing little letters in my own way.
 
Years after my grandmother passed away, I still find myself returning to that sewing box—still just as wonderfully chaotic as it was thirty-five years ago. Threads from that same box finds its way into the paintings I make at forty,

and there is an irresistible pleasure in using my grandfather's typewriter to turn those paintings into letters.
