Clementine didn’t know her name.
She lived one thousand seven hundred meters above the ground. For as long as she could remember, all she did was walk along a thin wire.
She walked upright. Her body seemed to be made of concrete. Her pace never changed. Sometimes, when something hurt, she couldn’t quite tell where the pain was coming from. A mosquito bite, the tip of a pencil, small things. She would search with her hands, letting her fingers drift across her body, trying to figure out whether it was the right side or the left. If her hands were really there, her fingers would stop for a moment, try to listen, then change direction and check somewhere else. Just when she thought she had found the source, a different spot would start to hurt even more. She would want to begin again—but this time, her hands were gone.
Clementine walked for sixty-five thousand kilometers.
She arrived somewhere.
She just stood there and looked here.
Everything was empty.
That’s what they had said.
____
Her yer boştu.
Öyle söylemişlerdi.
Yalnızca orası kalmıştı.
Başkalaşım kayaları.
